Seventy years of Schaumburg
Incorporated March 7, 1956 with 130 residents, Schaumburg is now the 12th largest community in Illinois — 78,723 people at the 2020 Census, up 6 percent from 2010.
History
From farm village to the Place for Business
Schaumburg’s growth from the mid-1960s to 1990 was among the fastest in the country. Woodfield Mall opened in 1971 with 59 stores and made the Village a regional destination; the office parks, hotels and the convention center followed. In 2018 Money Magazine named Schaumburg the best place to live in Illinois, citing its economic and educational performance, affordability, convenience, safety and a neighborly way of life.
The Village is led by an elected Village President and six Trustees, with a Village Manager who oversees daily operations, prepares the annual budget and supervises every department.
