What happens after the season
The year The Mill opened
- 18 Crew Members in the 2025 cohort earned 92 certificates. Two cohorts of 40 had been planned before federal grant terminations.
- 23 contract partners, seven of them first-time, across 55 worksites and more than 11,000 stewardship hours.
- 755 trees planted with the Pittsburgh Canopy Alliance, the most in a single year in Landforce history.
- The Mill opened in October: 10,000 square feet, $800,000 of equipment secured, dry kiln and biochar kiln installed with Pittsburgh Urban Tree.
- The Landforce Catalytic Fund was established through a major commitment from a donor.
- Three 2024 alumni were rehired in October. More than half the cohort received SNAP navigation support.
- Behind the scenes: 257 invoices paid, 26 payrolls run, 22 equipment items and 7 vehicles inventoried.
Two cohorts, twelve months
- Two cohorts and nearly twice as many Crew Members as the year before; transitional employment extended to the full 12 months.
- 159 certifications earned; 83% completed training; 88% offered employment within two weeks; 100% who applied got an interview.
- 44 projects in 32 municipalities and neighborhoods with 20 partners.
- Edward Johnson hired to lead Responsible Wood Products; lease signed for The Mill; Wood-Mizer sawmill acquired.
- Funding: $620,000 in state grants, $4,276,800 in federal grants and $800,000 in foundation grants.

- Levine Impact Lab Operational Support cohort, 2026.
- Landforce Catalytic Fund, established 2025 through a major donor commitment.
- AARP Purpose Prize feature and Social Enterprise Alliance recognition, 2025.
- PA DCNR Bureau of Recreation and Conservation, Community Conservation Partnership Program, which funds this brand and website project.
- U.S. EPA Brownfields job-training grant, 2021. A $15.3M EPA Community Change grant awarded in 2024 was terminated in May 2025; Landforce had already secured $800,000 of equipment for The Mill.
- Google.org Impact Challenge Pittsburgh: $50,000 award.
- Allegheny County climate grant, 2025; Commonwealth of Pennsylvania urban farming support, 2026.
Skilled workers, not statistics
Landforce reports these figures because funders and partners ask for them. They describe the barriers Crew Members have faced, not who they are.

Carbon retained in reclaimed wood
The RFP asks for a display of carbon retained by keeping urban trees out of the landfill and chipper. No figure or methodology has been published yet, so this block is a placeholder: it will show board feet milled, logs recovered and carbon retained, with the method stated underneath, once Landforce confirms the numbers.
